Heidi Monroe started teaching full time at SPU in 2007 while continuing in practice as a pediatric registered nurse at Seattle Children’s Hospital, where she worked for 26 years. She has long been associated with SPU, and graduated from the same program in which she now teaches. Dr. Monroe has built extensive nursing experience since 1989, working in pediatric acute, ambulatory, and community settings. She has developed a deep appreciation for children and their families and seeks to promote excellent nursing care to help them thrive.
Dr. Monroe’s teaching and research also focus on the education and practice of clinical ethics in nursing. Her doctoral dissertation, Education and Experience in Nursing Professional Values Development described opportunities and obstacles in nurses’ alignment with the nursing code of ethics. Additional research has been in the area of diversifying the nursing workforce, specifically related to men in the profession. Her thesis, Recruitment and Retention of Men in Pediatric Nursing: Their Perceptions and Experiences in a Regional Pediatric Medical Center described the challenges and rewards experienced by men caring for children and their families in their nursing careers. In 2021, Dr. Monroe published a book co-authored with Dr. Richard Steele, Professor Emeritus of Moral & Historical Theology, titled Christian Ethics and Nursing Practice (Wipf & Stock).
While at SPU, Dr. Monroe has taught courses in professional identity, pediatric nursing, community health nursing, nursing ethics, senior synthesis nursing, nursing leadership, research, university seminar, and colloquium.
