Student Handbook

The Nursing Student Handbook, (with Supplements) has been written to provide the student with information specific to the curriculum, SHS — Nursing policies and procedures, campus facilities, resources, etc.

Falcon Advantage Program

All educational materials required for the Nursing Program are available through Akademos, SPU's Online Bookstore.

SPU's Nursing Falcon Advantage Program provides all required course materials to undergraduate nursing students by the first day of class at a flat, discounted rate. All required course material designated by the Nursing Faculty will automatically be shipped to you on or before the first day of classes and the cost of materials will be automatically charged to your student account to be paid along with your tuition. During your first quarter in the program you will recieve all course materials needed for the first three quarters of the program; similary in the fourth quarter for the last three quarters of the program.

Although your student account will only be charged for materials in Quarter 1 and Quarter 4, it is necessary to "opt in" all 6 quarters in the nursing program. This will ensure you have continued access to course materials.

Typhon

Students in a nursing program at SPU subscribe to a service provided by Typhon Group, LLC during their internship or practicum experience. Typhon functions as a complete electronic student tracking system, including patient encounter logs, evaluations for assessment, student rotation scheduling, student, preceptor, and clinical site databases. 

Graduate Students: Login to the NPST Typhon System as a Student. 

Undergraduate Students: Login to the NSST Typhon System as a Student. 

COVID-19 Vaccine

Enrolled nursing program students must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated at least 4 weeks prior to entering the program. Fully vaccinated means receipt of the COVID-19 vaccine primary series and the most recent booster dose recommended by the CDC.

A significant portion of the learning experience is in clinical practice with regional health care organizations that require practicing students to be fully vaccinated in order to be on-site for clinical experiences, we must adhere to their requirements. COVID-19 vaccinations continue to evolve, and nursing students will be informed of the most current expectations.

While SPU does grant medical and religious medical exemptions for the general population of students, the nursing program does require the most recent COVID-19 vaccine recommendations.

Nursing Technicians (NTEC)

A nursing technician (nurse tech) is a nursing student preparing to get an RN or LPN license. Nurse techs are licensed to work in hospitals, nursing homes, or clinics.

To become a licensed nurse tech you must be enrolled and in good standing at SPU and haven’t graduated.

Required Forms:

1. Employer Verification Form – The hiring manager at your place of employment will provide you with the Employer Verification Form upon hiring. Student applicants must complete Sections 1 and 2 on the form. The nursing program must have this form before the Education Verification Form can be completed and signed by the Dean.
2. Q1-Q4 Skills List –Signed skills lists are available to student applicants after they successfully complete each quarter in the BSN program. A skills list can be requested prior to an interview for a nurse tech position. Note: Skills Lists are only available for Quarters 1-4
3. Education Verification Form – The Education Verification Form signed by the Dean will only be returned to the student applicant when the nursing program receives the signed Employer Verification Form. Students must also complete Sections 1 and 2 on the form.
4. Clinical Evaluations – Students can download their evaluations directly from Typhon.

Forms

• Change of Directory Information: Submit a “Change of Directory Information” (PDF) to the Office of the Registrar in Demaray 151 or email it to registrar@spu.edu, and submit a copy to shsstaff@spu.edu.
• Release of Educational Records: Submit with requests for verification or recommendations.
