Thanks to SPU’s Urban Plunge, Heather Bean spent
five days getting a taste of what homeless people
encounter in downtown Seattle. When she got
back to campus, she switched her major to sociology — and never looked back. This year, Heather
was student liaison to Tent City 3, a self-managed
community of homeless people who lived on campus
for three months. While combatting homelessness
can feel insurmountable, she says connecting
students with TC3 residents through game and
worship nights, poetry workshops, and dinners has
taught her the diversity of ways to make a difference.
