Hazing Violations Report
In compliance with Washington State House Bill 1751 (Sam’s Law), SPU publicly reports all findings of hazing violations involving student organizations, athletic teams, or living groups. These reports are designed to promote transparency and accountability while safeguarding student privacy under FERPA. The public hazing report includes:
- Name of the organization: Identifying the student organization, athletic team, or living group involved.
- Investigation timeline: The start and end dates of investigations resulting in findings of hazing violations.
- Incident description: A summary of the hazing activity.
- Sanctions imposed: Details of disciplinary actions taken.
- Date charged: The date the organization was formally charged with a violation.
Reports do not include personal or identifying information about individual students and comply with federal privacy laws. SPU maintains these records for five years and updates them at least 45 days before the fall term and 10 days before all other academic terms. Investigations that do not result in a finding of formal violations of the Student Code of Conduct or state or federal law will not be included in the report.
SPU's Hazing Policy
Hazing is strictly prohibited under SPU’s Student Standards of Conduct (Section 6.1). Hazing is defined as any act during recruitment, initiation, or affiliation with a group that risks physical harm, psychological distress, or humiliation—regardless of consent. Violations may result in severe sanctions for individuals and organizations.
