Lawrence Paltep, Graduate Certificate in Faith Formation ’25
Introducing Lawrence Paltep
Born in the Philippines and migrating to Seattle at age 8, I have always navigated the tension between cultural norms. Growing up, I balanced the communal values of my upbringing with the independence emphasized in American culture. These experiences have shaped my sensitivity to human connection and communication, especially in ministry.
My faith journey began during my senior year of high school when I attended my first youth camp. Struggling with identity and isolation, I was invited by a pastor to join a youth group where I experienced hospitality and acceptance that transformed my understanding of Christian community. A pivotal moment came during an “Act of Faith” activity, which opened my heart to God’s grace and love. Since then, I have sought to deepen my relationship with God and live in ways that reflect God’s love for others.
How did you come to Seattle?
My journey to Seattle Pacific University began with a desire to combine academic and vocational goals with opportunities for spiritual formation and ministry. Before learning about the Graduate Christian Faith Formation Certificate program, I diligently applied for jobs in civil engineering. However, unexpected obstacles seemed to block my opportunities to secure a contract, leading me to reevaluate my path.
For context, I have served as a youth program director, led Christian small groups through InterVarsity, directed youth camps, and participated as a representative for global church events in the United Methodist Church. These experiences solidified my calling to ministry and revealed the need for proper theological education to guide those I serve — kids, youth, and young adults. I always knew I would return to school to deepen my theological understanding and strengthen my ability to build and nurture God’s community.
During my job search, I was introduced to Rev. Ashley Skinner Creek, who explained how SPU’s graduate programs could offer the flexibility to pursue theological education while managing my everyday responsibilities. Little did I know this program would provide so much more: a space to discern my theology, build relationships with other seminarians and spiritual leaders, and connect with a supportive network to help clarify my path in ministry. While I am still discerning the specifics of my calling, being in this program feels like the next faithful step in preparing for the work God has set before me.
What has made SPS meaningful to you?
SPS has provided a unique space to integrate academic learning with practical ministry. The community here has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration as I continue to discern God’s call on my life. The emphasis on spiritual practices and formation, mentorship, and collaborative ministry has enriched my seminary journey far beyond the classroom.
Being a part of the SPS and Discipleship Fellows communities has allowed me to practice the values of hospitality, affirmation, and care that I first encountered in my youth group years ago. Through soul check-ins, small-group leadership, spiritual practices, interactions with other faith leaders, and community events, I have witnessed how deeply God values presence and connection.
