Jazz Ensemble

Jazz Ensemble

The SPU Jazz Ensemble is a select group of instrumentalists who study and perform music from the rich and varied repertoire of jazz. The ensemble, usually in smaller combos, performs classic and contemporary works by some of the world's most renowned composers, both on and off campus, including at concerts and events.

As a member of Jazz Ensemble, you will be immersed in a variety of activities designed to develop technical skills, musicality, knowledge, and performance practices. A comprehensive program of jazz instruction is designed to meet your individual needs and broaden your musical horizons. The Jazz Ensemble is a dynamic group where students can develop specific jazz-related improvisation skills in an enjoyable and rewarding setting. Students often collaborate with other musicians and ensembles.

Membership

Membership in the Jazz Ensemble is by audition. If you are a musician interested in playing jazz, you are invited to audition for the Jazz Ensemble — whether you are a Music major, a Music minor, or a nonmajor. Auditions take place at the beginning of Autumn Quarter (see notices posted in the lobby of Crawford Music Building prior to the beginning of the quarter). You can also contact the director/instructor.

A yearlong commitment is expected, and you may take the course an unlimited number of times.
